I did the audio version of this book, read by Joe Mantegna. I'm not sure if it was the reader or just the dialog of millions of short choppy sentences, but I wanted to punch someone through most of the book. It's a perfectly good story, maybe just read it yourself and skip the audio version.

Last year at this time I was patting myself on the back for having a successful holiday season and looking forward to a long and happy book selling career.

In the last twelve months the e-book market has literally exploded. No longer is the Amazon Kindle king of the hill; now we're watching sales of the Nook Color, IPad, Sony Reader and others soaring. Significant price cuts, 3G, Wi-Fi, touch screens, web surfing and full color have made these little devices much more popular. One of the little devils even turned up under my Christmas tree! I am now the guilty owner of a Nook Color.

For the first week I only used my Nook at home with the blinds closed, late at night, under the covers. I was sure the book police would show up and confiscate my business license. When it didn't happen I came out into the daylight and learned some cool stuff.

I have to tell you - I like it. I haven't read a lot of books with it yet, but I do use it to read my favorite magazine while I'm on the treadmill. I check email, write and upload my newsletters (yes, this is from my Nook!), surf the web, listen to music and a host of other activities. On the downside, it's heavier then the average book and I worry about carrying it places because it was a lot more expensive than a book! I'm still finding that the books are more expensive than here in the store but its fun and helpful in my daily life so I'm not completely hating it...

I'll post more as I have time to investigate further and I would love to hear your thoughts... did you get one? give one? want one? Where is the future of our books heading?

Wow - it's been so long since I blogged that I don't even know where to start with this!

I guess the best thing to do would be to say ~ so sorry ~ for not being better about staying in touch with all of you! But you know how it is... you put your head down to work one Tuesday and when you look up its four months later!

So, I suppose a quick update is in order. For those of you who have been hanging around with us for awhile... Ronda (our store manager of 6 years) left us. We miss her - she was so organized and very protective of the books! But our lives change and we move on... Eventually the perfect person to replace her will wander through, but in the meantime we've been floating along on our own.

I've been running all over the country (as usual) buying up all the best books for all of you. I had to take a little break in September to have my old lady hip fixed. But it went very well and I have my groove back, which is good for you guys cause now I can buy books twice as fast! (zip! zip!)

We've made a few changes here in the store - nothing major - just a little house cleaning, a bit of re-arranging and some shelf additions. Always looking to make things perfect for you! We've expanded the movie section which everyone seems to really love - and we added the video games this year as well - also a very popular addition.

If you haven't visited in awhile or checked out the website in over a month you might want to take a peek or drop in - - I'm just saying.... you don't want to miss anything fabulous do you?

Circus Mode!

It's May!! You probably already knew that. But what you may not know is that its Circus month for us! Every year near the end of May we make the trek to Hershey, PA to see Ringling Brothers. I'm so excited about this year, there are nine of us going this time - I had to rent a van! We've got Celebrity Seating - this means that we get to sit front row center, get our own personal clown ~ and...... we get to be IN the circus!! Does it get any better then that??

Heck no.

So, to get myself into the proper frame of mind to go to the Greatest Show on Earth I've been reading circus books. My favorite so far has to be Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants - if you haven't read this one yet, don't pass it up! It's a wonderful book - the ending is exactly what I wished for!

I also read Bruce Feilers Under the Big Top - his memoir of a season he spent with the circus and Modoc by Ralph Helfer - the true story of the greatest elephant that ever lived. I loved all of these... and if you're not lucky enough to be going to the circus you should at least enjoy some great circus titles!

Swamped!

Where does the time go? Seems like I look at the calendar and it's the first of the month - then somehow its the 20th.

Things are hopping at the store right now - we had our children's book fair - it was a smashing success! Thanks to everyone who came, browsed and bought. I'll definitely have to do that again.

We're now running like mad to all the spring book events and then spending every waking moment getting the books into the database and on the shelves as quickly as possible. There have been some great finds this month - a ton of great quilting books, about 1500 mysteries, more then 2000 romances, the children's section has been completely re-worked and is stuffed with great books, the inspirational fiction shelves are literally overloaded with with some of the best picks we've had in a loooong time, I even managed to get a great deal on some audio books - nice new ones!!

So, take a little time out of your hectic spring schedule - plan your summer vacation, projects etc... and stop by and see us!

Bigger ~ Better ~ More!

Spring is finally here! I love warm weather, it makes me want to start new projects. Right now is a great time to start new projects because we had a bit of a flood at the store last week during the three day rain event.

So, our new store will be even newer! We've had new plumbing done this week, we're expecting the construction and carpet crews first of the week. As soon as they finish, we'll start to set up for the Childrens Book Fair which will be April 1,2 &3 during regular store hours. There will be hundreds of new books at 50% or more off cover, as well as used books in great shape at our usual great prices. Mark your calendar, bring a friend or two and plan to stop in for a fun event!

The other fun news.... we're adding new shelving up front - and on that shelving will be our new Video Game section - we've got almost 700 games to get things rolling! Another good reason to stop by don't you think?

Our Shared Space

We're sharing our store with some interesting businesses this month.

The Sheridan School Mountain Campus is hosting an open house this month at their amazing camp near Rileyville, VA off about 5 miles from Luray. The camp is 130 acres of woods, mountains, water, adventure and serious fun. If you're planning on sending your kids to summer camp this year, don't miss out on the opportunity to check out Sheridan. Next time you're in the store pick-up their brochure at the front counter. Your kids will love you for it! (can you picture a 500ft zip line?)

Our Meet the Locals guest for March is Hands to Create ~ a bead and pottery business owned by Tammy Coffman, located on Main St in Front Royal. Tammy's shop is full of beautiful, colorful beads and ceramic supplies. She does classes, camps and workshops as well as hosting all manner of parties. Stop in to see some of her work and pick up information about upcoming events.

April is shaping up to be a busy month at the store - we're planning a children's bookfair for April 1,2 &3 - there will hundreds of new and nearly new childrens and young adult books. Plan now to stop in - and watch your email for updates!

The list will cover ideas for book club reads for all ages and genres.

     You still have time to help put the list together! If you've read anything recently that you think would make for some lively discussion - send it along to me! It doesn't have to be a new book, it just has to be a book that you you've probably already told friends about, or had discussions about. You can send your suggestions by simply posting a reply to this Blog below.

When I Wasn't Looking - I Got Old!

On the 17th of February my son whacked into a milestone, he's 29 years old. We did what families do for such events - everyone came to dinner, ate too much, sang the happy birthday song, teased him about getting old and had a generally cheerful time.

At some point, it occurred to me that if he's old at 29 ~ which is what everyone kept saying ~ what the heck does that make me?? I hit one of those milestones myself this past September - only problem is, my milestone is quite a bit further along (yes, I'm actually 50!), so I suppose that makes me ancient?

Funny, I don't feel 'old', at least not most of the time. I'm rather enjoying my current age - my kids are mostly grown, I have a wonderful business, free time to spend as I wish, hobbies I enjoy and good health. If this is how it feels to get 'old' then I'm glad I finally got here and I hope the rest of you get to be 'old' too!!

The Woes of Snow - with a Bassett

Unless you live in a cave you've probably heard about the snow we had this weekend. Here in my little town in Virginia it measured about 20" - a ton by anyones standards, except maybe Alaska. We've had a truckload of snow this winter, which normally I don't mind too much. I get more reading done, catch up on chores and projects that I don't normally have time for, that sort of thing.

The worst thing about 20" of snow is that we own a 14" dog. Lucy, our bassett hound, is over 3.5 feet long measured nose to tail but only stands a little over 14" at the top of her back. She weighs about 65 lbs - we consider her to be the platypus of dogs.

She loves the snow - mostly, she loves to eat snow, but snow romping is very high on her list of fun stuff to do. Yesterday morning when we went to look for our cars and driveway, of course Lucy had to 'go' too. It quickly became obvious that Lucy was going to have an issue finding a suitable spot. Within seconds she had completely disappeared, she tried hard to eat her way out but to no avail! So, in addition to shoveling out two cars, 60 ft of driveway, sidewalks and a path to the trash cans we had to shovel out a poo room for the dog! While she whined and bayed instructions and demanded that we hurry!

For those of you who live in the northern climes - you must deal with this every winter - is there an easy solution? are you all up there digging out poo rooms? how do you find your short dogs in over 12" of snow? One of our customers asked me if I wanted to be like Barnes & Nobel - I think I might have been insulted. Something I learned a long time ago - don't go where you're not wanted! I have no desire to be one of the 'big box' stores.

What I do want, and have been striving to attain for the last fourteen years is to be exactly what people want in a used bookstore! I think I have it a pretty good idea of what you guys are looking for -

We Love January!

     January at the bookstore is a great month - all the people who got gift cards for Christmas come in to collect their loot. People buying stuff with someone else's money is truly a fun thing to watch!

     January is also our time to make changes to the store - we go through the inventory - clear out the old stuff, rearrange the stuff that needs more (or less!) space, add new stuff and generally check the lay out. I love this part of the job because it makes everything seem new again.

     The other good thing about January, it's when I start to look for new authors to read. I don't want to get stuck in a Reading Rut ~ only reading one or two authors that I love and waiting in frustration for their next book to come out. I read reviews, talk to the customers, listen to the book channel on my XM radio in the car and visit all the bookstores. The goal is to find at least five new authors - these can be authors who have been around a long time or the newbies on the bookshelves.

     So far this year's list is shaping up pretty well --

Jenna Blum ~ Those Who Save Us
John Hart ~ The Last Child
David Liss ~ several titles of historical mysteries (I can't wait!)
Nancy Taylor Rosenberg ~ legal thrillers that I love!
Jasper Fforde ~ The Eyre Affair (and other really crazy literary mysteries)
Belva Plain ~ I know, been around forever -- but I've only read one!
Stephanie Laurens ~ historical romances with humor & hunky guys (whew!)

Merry Happy Jolly! Ho! Ho! Ho!

Wow! I spent yesterday holiday shopping with two of my kids. I have to say, anyone who tells you the economy is in the tank and that we aren't spending money hasn't been to a mall in America this week!

It was literally a river of people gliding, rushing and burbling along through the stores. Everyone seemed in good spirits and there were tons of sales. We found some really great deals, Target especially seemed to have lowered prices on an awful lot of stuff - toys, electronics and housewares. It was really pleasant to see so many people smiling and preparing for one of the best holidays we have.

I hope this post finds you all smiling as well - hopefully this holiday season will be one of good cheer and good times with family and friends.

Meet the Author

I attended an author event at our local library this week - it was... interesting. The library was using the event as a fundraiser. I love libraries, and feel like it's important to support my community (especially through books!) - but really, $75.00 per person? In this economy? Ouch!

It made me think though.... do authors want to do more or less of this type of event? Would they be willing to do book events (signings, discussions, workshops) at a used bookstore or is this sort of thing reserved for stores selling new books?

The better question though, - do our customers want to meet authors at our store?

Inspiration

I was walking this morning, trying to work off the ice cream I promised myself I wasn't going to eat anymore, and when I got over the guilt about that, (took about 10 seconds!) - I moved on to more important stuff.

I was, as usual trying to come up some interesting way to promote my business. I feel as though I can't just sit and do nothing, I'm sure someone younger, (half the population!) more energetic or with a better idea will come along and run me out of town on a rail. I worry that the economy will drive me into the dirt, or worse, my own ignorance will do it!

So, I read a lot of books about running a business, being more creative, thinking differently or working smarter. I subscribe to Blogs, get newsletters or email, I visit other businesses to see what they're doing better then me (that's a long list!) and I listen to my customers.

From that whole list the most important advice I get is from the customers - I love all the people who come to the store or use the website, you guys give the best advice and are the most help to maintaining the business. I answered the phone yesterday and a gentlemen with a wonderful Texas drawl told me that he'd been trying to order some books on my website but there was a problem that I should check into. Two minutes with my website tech and the problem was solved - but I might not have found it for days if it hadn't been for my customer.

Don't assume that we don't want to hear from you ~ WE DO! We want to know what you think about everything - the store, the books, the website, this Blog, the newsletter, our service - anything and everything - if you're willing to take a moment to share what you know - we're willing to hear it and try to make things better!

Speak Up! Speak Out! Share! We want to give you what you want most in a bookstore - you just have to tell us what it is!

What I Learned From the Wedding of the Century

So, my daughter got married last Sunday, I survived the ordeal and I'm here to tell you that throwing a wedding is probably right at the top of my list of "Holy Cow! Events"... In case you haven't had the pleasure yet, I thought I'd share some helpful tips about what I learned along the way.

1. No matter how organized you think you are, no matter how many lists you make, no matter how many meetings you have, emails you fire back and forth, phone calls you conference, books you read or advisors you have - you are going to forget stuff.

2. No matter how many times you say, "I will NEVER act like so-and-so's mom!" - yes, you will.

3. No matter how many times you say, "I will not pay that much for....." - yes, you will.

4. No matter how many fittings you go to - you will cry when you see your daughter in the dress.

5. Surround yourself with friends and family, keep smiling, ask for help, plead for help - and no matter what else you say no to - say a resounding, "yes!" - to the open bar.

6. PS - get an amazing photographer - you will be stunned at the stuff you miss!

At this point - you should all be feeling very sorry for me - and you should all run down to the bookstore and buy at least $10.00 worth of books to help me feel better.

The Buzz....

Just thought you might like to know that it's definitely fall in upstate New York! I just got back from a book trip near Rochester - it's absolutely beautiful going up through the Finger Lakes Region right now - the trees are just starting to turn, the weather is perfect, dry and cool and every little town seems to be having a fall festival of some sort - delightful! If you have a little free time, its really worth the drive up.

We've added over 4000 books to the inventory in the last 10 days! This is impressive because I'm so busy trying to plan a wedding that I hardly have time for anything else! But I've discovered that if you give up sleep you can get a lot more stuff done! So, there are hundreds of mysteries, thrillers, romance, history, children's books.... you name it - I've added some to the inventory!

Now that it's fall -- you have a little more free time - do something nice for yourself.... come browse your favorite bookstore and take home a stack! You deserve it!

Where did the Summer Go?

This has been one speedy month! I try to update the Blog early in the month -- somehow I totally missed the 'early' part! Oh, well -- you guys are creative - pretend I wrote something pithy and interesting that stimulated some fabulous dinner conversation.

I'm actually in the middle of planning a wedding - our second one this year! I'm completely confused by all the rules, details and drama associated with throwing a wedding. What it boils down to is - a big party with a fancy dress. Now if someone could just explain to me how that should equate to a minimum outlay of $25,000 I would definitely give you a free book!

I'll keep checking my email for your replys!!

We spent this last week installing new shelves (eight of them!), and opening boxes - it's been like Christmas around here! A total of just over 2200 books have been added to the database - Classics, Romance, Westerns, Self Help, Mysteries and Sci-fi made up the largest numbers - but there were lots of history, education and Autobios as well.

We're working as fast as we can to fill the shelves - stop by or visit the website soon to get the first pick before the one you really wanted gets snapped up!....... 300 boxes will go faster then you think!

The Sunshine State

We have made our last official trip to Florida! For those of you who are new to us.... we bought a bookstore in Florida - 70,000 books! One of those, too good to pass up kinda deals. We packed it, stored it, loaded it on to a container truck, it was hauled here by train where we unloaded it - and now - FINALLY we'll be adding the books to our growing store! The last load that we hauled up here was 11,800 lbs - whew, do I feel strong or what??

You might want to plan on visiting the store to pick up a book or twelve....

I don't know - I'm just saying.

Learning Mode

I'm in learning mode right now. I have been attending marketing workshops with the wonderful, helpful, knowledgeable folks at SCORE - love those guys! I love learning - I want to know everything, so whenever I can fit it into my schedule I try to spend time learning something new. I'm hoping it will help keep my brain from shriveling up into a tiny walnut! Sometimes it's related to the business but other times I just want to learn how to do new stuff, or I have to learn new stuff because my kids got involved in something that required my interaction - archery, forestry, birding, jewelry making - the list is endless and I suppose thats a good thing because if I reach the end of the list of things I want to learn it's probably time to die!

I have wasted an enormous amount of time and energy over the last four days dealing with thieves. Someone brought stolen DVD's into the store to sell to us - we, trusting fools that we are, bought them. Over the next few days - police, other retail store owners, the person who claims the DVD's were stolen from them, myself and my employees have dealt with the fallout from this. This will cost me time and money - filling out reports, talking to the police & the other retailers involved, making new store policies about taking in merchandise, having the items confiscated as evidence and in tax dollars spent to cover the cost of police salaries and the running of the court system. I am angry and frustrated over having to deal with such a mess because the most frustrating part of all of this is that the thief got exactly $11.00 in cash.

New Stuff at the Used Book Place!

Just a quick FYI -- I've spent the last three days databasing over 1000 DVD's! Still have a couple hundred children's and family movies to do but I thought I'd give you all the heads up that they're on the website and priced to sell!

The next month will also see other changes at your favorite bookstore - we're adding shelves and moving a few sections around to make room for almost 300 boxes of books that are headed up from Florida - be sure to check the website often - you don't want to miss getting a copy of that favorite book that you've been searching for!

It's Beautiful Down Here!

Wow! If you have a few minutes and you live close enough to putter on over - come check out our new Spring Look! The book planter out front is brimming with purple and yellow! I finally found a little time between weddings, book sales, drivers education (yes, I have a 15 yr old!) and my bead addiction to finish up some reading. Just read The Whiskey Rebels by David Liss - wow! he's been on the top of my histoical mystery favorites for several years. Added a new one this week - Tobsha Learner who wrote The Witch of Cologne - I liked her characters, the bad guys are very, very bad - I definitely loved hating them! I'm also reading Clive Cusslers new Dirk Pitt thriller brought to me by one of our customers ~ THANKS!! I love getting suggestions from all of you - so, feel free to boss me around!

Spring Book Season

Spring is an especially great time to be in the book business. I spend most of my days rushing to get to one sale or another where I'll stand in line with hundreds of other people waiting for an event to start. This is some of the most fun I have, I love people! I love to talk to people, listen to people, watch people. Book lovers are some of the best people to spend time with - they are far and away my most favorite form of entertainment. I can stand in line for two hours and have conversations with dozens of people on dozens of topics ranging from favorite authors or books to politics, religion, food, weather, clothing styles, travel tips, music, science, history or any of a million other topics. It's an amazing education, I always come away feeling as though I've expanded my core of knowledge - and then I get to do my most favorite thing -- buy more books for all my favorite people!
This spring has been loads of fun - there are tons of new books out by both, old favorites and new names in the book world, so it's been a great good time hunting up the best of all of them to stock the store with. I'm excited to be filling the shelves with literally thousands of new books after a long winter of waiting.... waiting.... waiting... for the Spring!!

April News --

Wow! I've been running like crazy - gathering books for all our avid readers! Just got back from a whirlwind trip - two events in Tennessee - one in Maryville and one in Loudon - picked up about 1000 books and then headed to Columbia, SC for a HUGE event that I love going to! It's where I get a lot of the current fiction that everyone loves! From there it was straight on to Gainesville, FL for a big, big event - and a quick run to Orlando for some of the 30,000 books that are still in storage.
I'll be in town for two days and then its on to Maryland, back for several events in VA that will add another 1500 titles - You better get down here before the good stuff is all gone!

Wow!! I just got back from a won-der-ful book event! I bought about 750 books that will hit the shelves before the end of the day Tuesday the 31st - don't miss out on something you've been searching for!! Come check it out!

And.... don't forget - This Saturday, April 4 we'll be closing early because we have a wedding to go to!! Everything will be business as usual on Sunday the 5th.

Welcome to the first posting of my new blog!

I'm not sure where I'll go with this blog - for right now I'm just hoping to learn how to get the thing linked to my webpage! Eventually I'll get it working and use it to update all of you when anything interesting is going on at the store. For example, its March - that means that we're just entering the book events season. There will be thousands of books hitting the shelves in the next few months as I travel the country in search of the best reads I can find.

I got back yesterday from Durham, NC, I brought back several hundred books that have already been added to the database. I lucked into a fair number of inspirational fiction as well as a ton of best sellers, classics, mysteries and even some childrens books.

Now would be a good time to scout around the website (www.pagemaster-books.com_ and see if you find anything you can't live without. If you don't see what you're looking for you can shoot me a reply to this post or set up an offline search on the website.
